Thomas Cumberbatch was born 17 July 1899 in Wigan in Lancashire, England. He was the eldest son of Thomas Cumberbatch and his wife Eliza nee Causey.

Thomas joined the Royal Navy on 16 August 1917. He became Stoker K45076. He was discharged on being demobilised on 11 May 1919.

Thomas married Emily Mary Keefe in 1923 and they had two children:

  • Francis Cumberbatch, born 1931
  • Eileen Cumberbatch, born 1938

Thomas died in 1949 and his wife Emily died in 1970.
