My dear Sir Francis,
Having recently read in the papers that your service jubilee had been celebrated the other day I hasten to add my sincerest congratulations on the happy event with a hope that you will long continue at the head of the Department you have so long directed.
I would like to send you a little interesting news but my post is a veritable sinecure and there seems little or no prospect of its becoming a ‘lively’ berth commercially politically or otherwise.
To keep a clear conscience I have to ‘make’ work in the shape of reports on various topics but having now exhausted all subjects I know not what to turn my hand to in order to feel that I am earning my salary.
I wish they would reduce it to a Vice Consulate and transfer me elsewhere where I should have more ‘active’ work instead of wasting my time here.
Believe me
Dear Sir Francis
Yours very sincerely
