    • Letter from Robert William Cumberbatch dated 31 July 1848: We are suffering greatly from the heat, the thermometer is generally 86 degrees in the shade. The cholera still consumes in some localities. The deaths at Jassy during 40 days amounted to 12,000, the number is now under 40 per day. My brother has taken a very nice house with a garden in the adjoining Turkish Quarter which will serve for a summer residence..... this privilege has lately been granted by the Sultan on account of the demand and scarcity of houses since the late fire (The Lloyds of Harley Street - SoG FH/LLO Vol1 pp 78-79).

26 October 1850 (Fanny Hart writes): Poor little Ellen ! ! I am as sorry for the poor girl as you are but certainly will not be the first to make advances to Robert's family especially as I have too many other claims upon me (The Lloyds of Harley Street - SoG FH/LLO Vol 1 pp 79). [1]
    • Attempted Assassination of an English Consul

A Smyrna letter, dated January 28 [1865] says: - "Mr R. [Robert William] Cumberbatch, our new consul, had a narrow escape some days ago from being shot by one of our Albanian bashibazouk 'guards.' He was out shooting, accompanied only by his private canvass, when near the Djamavassy railway station, one of the ruffians in question cooly levelled his long gun and popped at him, as Mr. Cumberbatch himself might have done at a quail or a woodcock. Though the Albanian, however, had the advantage of a "sitting shot," he missed his game, as the ball went high over the consular bat. The fellow then bolted, and took refuge in a neighbouring cafe, close to the station, whither Mr. Cumberbatch, who made a mistake in not sending after and into him the contents of his double barrel [shotgun], followed him. There the rascal was joined by another bashi, but the consul, aided by his canvass, collared them both, and they are now safely in the konak prison awaiting, it is to be hoped, the worst that the Pacha can do for them."

    • Address of British residents in Smyrna.
      SMYRNA, May 24, 1865.
SIR: The crimes that have been committed upon the persons of the lamented late President of the United States, and of the Secretary of State, the honourable William H. Seward, have excited in us the strongest abhorrence. We would fain add our voice to that of our countrymen in England in giving expression to the feelings to which those deplorable events have given rise.
The great principles of morality, which are above all social or political contingencies, have been outraged in the crimes above alluded to, in a manner that makes it incumbent upon every community, however, small, to brand with execration the perpetrators of them, and to reject with indignation whatever plea may be put forward in extenuation of them.
The many and rare virtues that were combined in the person of President LINCOLN make his loss a great misfortune to the American nation, and demand that we should offer to it, as we do, our utmost sympathy and condolence.
We beg, sir, that you will be so good as to transmit to your government this expression of our sentiments, and to add our respectful request that Mrs. Lincoln may be informed how deeply we grieve at the calamity that has befallen her.
We have the honor to be, sir, your most obedient, humble servants,
      ROBERT WM. CUMBERBATCH

    • Robert William Cumberbatch and the slave trade

At Constantinople, the British ambassador, Sir Henry Elliot, and his embassy secretary, Henry Page-Turner Barron, sought to de-emphasise the significance of the slave trade. Barron for instance, reprimanded Drummond-Hay at Tripoli for his efforts to stir the provincial governor there into more energetic measures against the slave dealers. Elliot, for his part, sought to restrain the consul at Smyrna, Robert William Cumberbatch, a man very active in monitoring the movement of slaves in the eastern Mediterranean. Indeed, he went far in suggesting that the consul had been overzealous and alarmist.

[Source: "Slavery, Diplomacy and Empire: Britain and the Suppression of the Slave Trade 1807 - 1975" By Keith Hamilton, Patrick Salmon page 111 citing:

      by Alison Frank

Details of Robert William Cumberbatch's role in fighting slavery and giving runaway slaves sanctuary.

"What is certain is that when Cumberbatch began his appointment as consul in Smyrna in April 1864, he brought with him a marked anti-slavery zeal. It escaped no one's attention that the pace of complaints picked up dramatically once he took office."

"Cumberbatch's report additionally mentioned three young boys who had been taken violently in a raid in Abyssinia and then transported in a convoy of more than 100 children, first to Medina and then on to Egypt. Cumberbatch took all the children into custody—the youngest pair clinging tearfully to the legs of their adopted siblings until the Greek merchant himself led them to the consulate. Cumberbatch found positions for most of them in Smyrna, but was reported by the Austrian consul to have returned the littlest ones to their self-proclaimed foster father."

"Cumberbatch got in trouble with his superiors in part because he repeatedly took under his protection slaves in Smyrna who came to him complaining of ill-treatment. Juma fled to Cumberbatch to get away from his owner, a slave trader who had tried to murder him when he was unable to sell him after a month. Mehmet was shot through the leg when he tried to escape having his ears cut off by his owner. Hadji Mehmet served as a slave from about the age of 9 to the age of 16 and then was duly manumitted. Although he was married, as a free man, in Alexandria, he was pursued so relentlessly there by slave traders intent on re-enslaving him that he fled to the British consulate in Smyrna looking for protection."
